Your Summer Sun Glow Up Guide

July 24, 2022

Our skin cells turnover on average every 28 days so it’s never too late to start taking care of it. Your skin will show the results of how you treated it today, so treat it kindly and with love and respect. These specific skin tips are geared toward healthy youthful summer skin.

Healthy, Glowing Summer Skin

1. Go makeup free – Embrace the natural and give your skin a break, it will thank you! I like to go makeup free at least 5 days a week.

2. Incorporate dry brushing (before showering) to your daily routine. Dry brishing helps increase circulation and the removal of toxins.

3. Get your daily sun – Going in the sun is vital for optimal health and allows your body to manufacture its essential vitamin D within the skin – a vitamin (actually a hormone) most people are deficient in. Healthy Vitamin D levels are responsible for regulating mood, immune function, maintaining optimal weight, fighting off dis-ease and actually preventing skin from aging prematurely.

The key is to not burn, but go with a non-toxic sunscreen.  Start with 5 minutes per day and build up to 20 minutes. The more melanin in your skin, the more time you could and should spend in the sun to manufacture enough Vitamin D. If you burn easily, try waking up with the sun and allowing your body and eyes to see the first light. This prepares your body to better receive the sun’s rays. Our mitochondria (the power producers of our cells) gets 2/3 of their energy from the sun! Daily sun exposure will also help increase your Vitamin D intake, which plays a HUGE role in keeping our immune system strong and your glow real.

We have become a sun-phobic society yet all living things – plants, animals and we need the sun to survive and thrive. The sun helps your body absorb calcium by allowing your skin to produce part of the vitamin D complex that strengthens bones. Healthy sun exposure can also help with: acne, eczema, psoriasis, poison ivy rash, stress, immune support, and hormone levels.*

A word about sunscreens

There is definitely an increase in more readily available better for you sunscreens. But that mineral sunscreens are necessarily better for your skin. Most of the common “healthier” mineral sunscreens are formulated with oils like argan, hemp, and grapeseed, to name a few, that can actually age your skin due to their high oxidation and unstable qualities, especially when exposed to the sun. (Which is why I am sharing Oars + Alps – it is oil-free and free of harmful additives).

When buying sunscreens you want to look for stable oils, or oil -free, that have a high antioxidant content, non-nano particles and non-toxic if possible.

Did you know an estimated 90 percent of skin aging is caused by the sun?

It’s true – what you don’t know about UV exposure can hurt you. So, I wanted to dispel some myths about the most important thing you can put on your skin: SPF.

Myth: Tanning is safer if you get a base tan first. Not true. Exposure to UV rays is cumulative, meaning all UV rays cause damage to your skin no matter how or when it happens. Base tans only increase your exposure.

Myth: You can’t get sunburned on a cloudy day. False. Cloud cover can block a little UV radiation-but certainly not all. In fact, up to 80% of UV rays can pass through clouds. They often cause people to stay out longer, increasing the odds of a burn. You should still wear SPF.

Myth: You won’t get burned later in the day. Mostly untrue. The sun is strongest at Solar Noon, when it’s just above you. In the evening, the atmosphere can diffuse UV ravs, but thev still damage your skin.

46% OF AMERICANS NEVER WEAR SUNSCREEN

Oars + Alps is here to change that with convenient, effective SPF and ways to make SPF a daily habit.

Quick tips to making SPF a habit

#1 Habit stack

Put your SPF somewhere you’ll see it everyday, like on your bathroom counter, so you’ll see it while getting ready and be more inclined to put it on. Already have a habit you do every morning? Great! Start following up habits like brushing your teeth or washing your face with applying an SPF, so it too becomes second nature. I love the Oars + Alps Everyday Anti-Aging Face Moisturizer with SPF 37.

The O+A Anti-Aging Face Moisturizer is a moisturizer and sunscreen in one- my choice for everyday. It is light and non-greasy. It also comes in a 100% mineral version (white label).

#2 Keep it with you

Make the process of putting on SPF quick and convenient by keeping SPF products on hand wherever you may be. Keep a Clear SPF Go Stick in your car, briefcase, and/or carry-on bag, so you always have it.
