If you’re a long-time TGW follower you know how I take care of my skin; I want to look as good as I can for as long as I can, naturally. But there’s something people rarely talk about when discussing wrinkles and aging skin and that’s your sleeping pattern and positions. I am a side sleeper. This means I notoriously wake up with a squished face and more noticeable eye swelling, lines and wrinkles.
I am a side sleeper and have had sleep marks on my face for years – I wake up with a squished face and more noticeable eye swelling, lines and wrinkles.
What are sleep wrinkles
These are wrinkles caused specifically when the skin is deformed when coming into contact with the pillow while you sleep on your side or stomach.
- With age, these wrinkles stop fading away in the morning and become permanent.
- Often, the skin is deformed along the lines of existing expression wrinkles, making them deeper and more prominent.
- The average head weighs 11lbs creating a lot of pressure to your skin when sleeping on the side or back.
SLEEP WRINKLES CAN MAKE EXPRESSION WRINKLES MORE PROMINENT
There are two types of wrinkles, expression wrinkles and then there are those caused over time from squashing squishing and smushing your face into your pillow every night. Your skin gets stretched, causing creases, indentations and puffiness from all this tugging and friction.
Sleep wrinkles are normally temporary but they can actually exacerbate existing expression wrinkles, due to the location and normal creasing of expression lines. Sleep wrinkles are normally vertical, but around the delicate areas, such as the skin around your eyes, they can be horizontal. Sleep wrinkles and creasing usually go away once you wake up and your skin bounces back, but just like everything else, at some point and time, they won’t go away and they will be permanent. Since the skin tends to crease along already existing wrinkles. The fragile skin around the eyes and lips is especially vulnerable.
SLEEP WRINKLES ALMOST ALWAYS RUN VERTICALLY
Since no two faces are the same and we have different sleep habits, neither are people’s skin creases and wrinkles. There are currently many ways to successfully correct expression wrinkles with preparations made from bolutotoxin, as well as hyaluronic acid-based fillers.
When we smile or frown, our facial muscles contract for only a short time, while the skin deformation caused by contact with the pillow lasts for hours. This is why sleep wrinkles are more difficult to correct, and using fillers only produces a short-term effect.
Ordinary pillows do not give your head the support you need. Your head tilts to the side and you feel tension in your neck. This tension makes you want to switch positions. Your vertebrae twist and contort. They also create an unnatural bend in your neck.
- Your lower neck doesn’t get enough support.
- Your chin leans towards your chest, creating an unnatural bend in the neck.
- Circular wrinkles form around the neck.
Silk or satin pillowcases may reduce friction between your skin and the pillow, but it’s hard to believe that they can eliminate the pressure of your head causing skin indentation and eventually sleep wrinkles.
Why sleeping on your back helps anti-aging
Learning to sleep on your back is the key to youthful skin. Doing so helps prevent sleep wrinkles on your face and neck.
It also reduces morning puffiness thanks to the slight incline in the pillow’s design. The side head support bolsters allow you to relax while lying on your back
I did some research and found Sleep & Glow.

My personal experience
After over two months of sleeping on my back with my head resting on the pillow and it keeping my head in place, not only do I no longer wake up with fewer face creases my back is also feeling so much better for back sleeping.
I cannot believe how much I love this pillow, it is even better than I could have hoped for. I had become more aware of the deepening lines on my face and chest caused by the excessive pressure on my skin from side sleeping on regular pillows, so I tried to train myself to sleep on my back without much success. I would start out on my back when I fell asleep, but would always wake up on my side in the morning, regardless of how I placed my pillows to wedge myself in place. I found the Sleep & Glow pillow while researching beauty pillows to help with back sleeping. This pillow is amazing! Not only does the design of the pillow keep me in place on my back the entire night, but the foam in the pillow is incredibly soft and comfortable (not overly heavy and firm like most foam pillows). The elevated sides keep my head perfectly nestled in the middle of the pillow and the slightly elevated neck rest is the perfect shape and height for proper support.
I wake up and I swear my face looks better than when I went to sleep. I consider it an investment in my face. I can most definitely see a difference in my skin. I wake up looking refreshed, no puffiness, and no crease marks on my face from sleeping on my side. The beauty benefits were my main goal but I also have to mention how this pillow has taken away my neck and back pain.
