Anyone who has followed me for a while knows how I feel about needles, neuromodulators (Botox) and fillers. Short story: I was over-injected once causing my eyelids and brows to droop dramatically changing my face. Not good. I am also pretty dedicated to anti-aging as naturally as possible. At the same time, at 48, I am having some pretty significant skin concerns.
Why I sought out this treatment
When I had some deep radiofrquency microneedling (more on that here), I experienced some change in texture, not scarring per say, but the provider went really deep and now I have some light marks all over my face. Truth be told I did Morpheus right when it came on the market, and sometimes that isn’t the best.
I started researching treatments to improve skin texture by inducing collagen and elastin production naturally. I was very interested in Skin Pen, a micro-needling device.
This is a less deep version of micro-needling with radiofrequency you see everywhere. It’s an easy treatment, quick, and pretty painless. But I am going to give you all my tips to get the most of it!
Microneedling works by using extremely small needles to pierce the very top layers of the skin. In turn, this spurs skin growth and collagen production. As your skin reacts to the penetration of the needles, it induces collagen and elastin production. The Proof Is In The Pen
SkinPen gives your skin the reset that it needs. SkinPen the first FDA-cleared microneedling device, and it’s also made in the USA – which means it’s rigorously tested for safety. You get lots of benefits with the micro-injury provided by the microneedles, After talking to the experts at Greenwich Med Spa they suggested SkinPen microneedling.
How SkinPen Visibly Transforms Skin
The SkinPen treatment works in three simple steps, designed to activate the skin’s natural healing process. Following each session, the skin begins to heal itself, looking more renewed and rejuvenated over time. SkinPen is only used in professional settings and delivers dramatic results without the use of heat or chemicals.
Inflammation – SkinPen’s microneedles penetrate the skin’s surface, triggering a natural immune response to disinfect, remove debris, increase blood flow, and activate the creation of new tissue.
Proliferation -The micro-channels or tiny holes created by SkinPen are rebuilt with new granulation cells that include collagen proteins. Additionally, a new network of blood vessels develops.
Remodeling -New dermal tissues form, rich in collagen and elastin proteins. These proteins improve skin quality, visibly reducing facial acne scars and neck wrinkles, leaving skin more smooth, radiant, and younger-looking.
All about the treatment
GMS was so welcoming and put me at ease during my consult. I had their clinical practice director, Amanda, explain how the treatment would feel and even suggested a compliment treatment; something I had seen online and was very intrigued by- following up with stem cells, applied after to help with healing and skin regeneration.
My tricks for getting the most out of the treatment
I chose not to numb, this is new for me, but I find I swell much worse with the lidocaine numbing. This procedure is tolareble, if anything you feel a little tickly in certain parts, but not bad at all. Each area had two passes and the treatment lasted 30 minutes, it felt like light scratching all over my skin. I was very red after, but the provider used exosomes during and after the treatment to aid in healing. This is the move, I tell you! By the end of the day, the redness was gone and the next day I just looked as if I had a little pink tone, like time in the sun. You want to just avoid makeup the next two days, and then in 3 days you look fine! By the end of 5 days you are more glowy as the skin turnover has started. Three treatment sessions are recommended.
Exosomes – if you arent doing this, you should be
The exosomes, applied topically, both during and after treatment, accelerate collagen formation and induce healing.
Imagine a medical treatment that is so regenerative, cutting-edge, and promising that it has the potential to cure diseases that were once thought incurable. That’s exactly what exosome therapy might offer. By harnessing the power of tiny cellular messengers called exosomes (which are literally how our cells communicate with each other), this revolutionary therapy has the potential to treat a wide range of conditions, from chronic pain and cancer to neurodegenerative, inflammatory, and cardiovascular disorders too. In this blog post, we’ll specifically discussing using exosomes topically to help regenerate skin.
Exosomes are derived from adipose stem cells and contain over 50 growth factors, 30+ collagen types, and 300+ growth factors.
Exosome therapy is a new treatment that is used both medically and for beauty purposes. It involves a cutting-edge cellular regeneration technique that builds upon the success of other proven therapies like stem cell therapy and platelet-rich plasma. Exosomes can be delivered either to skin topically after a laser or micro-needling treatment. By improving cell signaling, reducing inflammation, and promoting cellular regeneration this therapy has shown promise.
At the heart of exosome therapy are exosomes themselves. Exosomes have been described as “tiny bubbles that are released from cells, especially from stem cells”. They’re also called extracellular vesicles. These “bubbles” are lipid spheres that act as messengers and carry genetic information and critical signaling proteins to be delivered to other cells.
When I visited the aesthetician at GMS for my first treatment, she confirmed that in her experience, exosomes really do have the ability to renew skin.
The exosomes were applied all over my face to penetrate into the “wounded” tissue and accelerate healing.
At GMS, they have a branded name for the treatment, it is called The Eraser.
What to expect immediately after the treatment
Skin may feel tight and more sensitive than usual and vulnerable to irritation and damage. You may
find that you are sensitive to products that you usually use and tolerate well. You may experience mild redness and irritation 1 to 7 days after the treatment. You may experience dryness up up 7 days post treatment.
Results
I am on my first treatment with SkinPen (also called The Eraser). The ideal treatment plan is 3 sessions spaced 4 weeks apart . It is still early and I have one treatment to go, but I certainly feel like my skin texture is improved, and my skin is looking better than ever.
94% of patients noticed an improvement in how their fine lines and wrinkles looked at one month post-treatment.
80% of patients said they noticed an improvement in acne scars in the treated area at one month post-treatment.
90% of patients said they would recommend SkinPen treatment to family and friends at one month post-treatment.
