Healthy snacking, momentum eating and the magic snack “formula”

July 28, 2020

Who feels like they are eating a little more than usual…maybe it’s grazing, mindlessly snacking…all because we are within reach of snacks way more than usual in our new reality. Momentum eating is a term coined by Dr. Will Cole to explain this new phenomenon that has cropped up as people are spending more time in their homes, closer to their pantries and refrigerators.

It can start out innocently enough. And know this, it’s not your fault. Its a trying time for us all. And your brain is wired to want a dopamine boost, especially during times of stress. It is called “Momentum eating” because you start slow, but you pick up speed as your brain is hit with dopamine and it wants MORE, MORE, MORE!

Luckily I have recently found the solution to help stop mindless eating and stop the momentum dead in it’s track. It is a magic formula really – FAT + FIBER equals satiety. If you reach satiety you will stop eating, feel satiated for hours and help your body burn fat for fuel. This is key to maintaining a healthy body weight, to healthy elimination, to restful sleep. Yes, it’s so surprising but true. It’s also so important for women – and healthy hormones.

We as women were told for years to eat low fat – nothing could be further from the truth. We need fat for our bodies to function properly – our brains, our hormones and our digestion. What makes the combination of fat plus fiber so magical is the fiber helps flush the fat through our systems.

Recently I have found these magical savory crackers that are the perfect vehicle for an afternoon snack. They taste delicious, are so versatile, are easy to pack and carry – they truly are the perfect snack. They are also surprisingly economical – I purchase mine from Amazon for a little more than 4.00 per pack! They are called Flackers. Flackers also sells a great variety pack to try all five flavors.

Flackers also sells several great variety packs on their site to try all the various flavors. It’s fun to experiment with the different sweet and savory flavors.

Flackers are USDA Organic, vegan, paleo, Non-GMO Verified and gluten-free. They are also made from simple, wholesome ingredients; the main ingredient being flaxseeds. Flaxseeds are low-carb (as low as 1g net carb per serving!), packed with fiber to help maintain normal cholesterol levels and promote optimal digestion, and are naturally high in alpha linolenic acid, a heart healthy omega-3 fatty acid.

Fun fact: Just one serving of Flackers has 3-4 grams of protein, six grams of fiber and is high in omega-3 fatty acids.

Here is my fav afternoon snack – Flackers toasts! What’s great is you can use one spread (in this case -full fat yogurt) but create sweet and savory combos with the different toppings.

My favorite combinations are as follows:

  • Full fat yogurt (I like Siggis) + peaches + raw honey
  • yogurt + cucumbers + smoked paprika
  • yogurt + avocado + everything but the bagel seasoning

You can also make the last two with hummus – a great, equally delicious, replacement.

My 3pm go to to keep me energized and full

    • Add Flackers breading to waffles recipes
